Should you take both?
Yes — most ambitious PHL students take both UPCAT and ACET (and DLSUCET, USTET). Each exam has separate timelines and evaluation; preparing for one helps with others. Different cutoffs and admission criteria mean qualifying for one doesn't predict the other.
When UPCAT is the better choice
- You need free university education
- You're open to UP Diliman, Manila, Los Baños, or any UP campus
- You're competitive academically (top 10% of class)
- You want broad academic flexibility
- You value the UP brand
When ACET is the better choice
- You can afford private university tuition (or strong scholarship application)
- You prefer Ateneo's Jesuit education + Loyola Heights campus
- You value smaller class sizes
- Specific Ateneo programmes appeal (Communications, Management, etc.)
- You're targeting Ateneo's strong alumni network
Realistic strategy
1. Apply to both
2. Apply to ACET scholarships separately (AECS)
3. Take both exams
4. Compare offers if both qualify
5. Consider total cost (Ateneo even with scholarship may cost more than UP)
Common mistakes
- Skipping UPCAT thinking "I'll just go to Ateneo" — UP option is valuable
- Not applying for ACET scholarships in addition to ACET
- Underestimating ACET difficulty (different style than UPCAT)
- Choosing university before scholarship outcomes known
