STEM Academic vs TVL Track

Two very different paths. STEM prepares for college; TVL prepares for direct workforce entry with technical skills.

When STEM fits

  • College + university plans clear
  • Family can support 4+ years post-SHS
  • Career requires degree (engineering, medicine, sciences)
  • Long-term earning potential prioritised

When TVL fits

  • Need immediate income post-SHS
  • Practical skills work appeals
  • Family financial constraints
  • Specific TVL specialty matches your interests
  • College not feasible immediately

Common TVL paths

  • Cookery / Food & Beverage: Restaurants, hotels, OFW (cruise, Middle East)
  • ICT: BPO entry, technical support, web development
  • Welding / Auto Mechanics: Manufacturing, automotive, OFW (Middle East construction)
  • Beauty Care: Salons, freelance services
  • Caregiving: Healthcare support, OFW (overseas caregiver)

TVL ≠ no college possible

Many TVL graduates eventually pursue college:

  • Work first → save → enroll later
  • Some universities accept TVL with bridging
  • TESDA certifications carry into college credit

TVL has strong OFW pathway

TESDA NC II in cookery, welding, caregiving, etc. is highly portable. Many OFWs from TVL backgrounds.
